Radiological Investigations and Surveys, Hunters Point Naval Shipyard, San Francisco, CA

NWE has been onsite at Hunters Point since 1999. We were originally contracted
by AFSC for radiological remediation, radioactive waste brokerage and eventually
to co-author the Historical Radiological Assessment.
Since 2003, NWE has been onsite at Hunters Point as a subcontractor to Tetra
tech ECI (formerly Tetra tech Foster Wheeler), performing radiological investigations—surveys,
sampling and radio analytical laboratory analysis.
The initial Scope of Work consisted of providing remediation services and release surveys of four separate areas identified as containing radionuclides exceeding the Primary Remediation Goals (PRG's). Designed and Conducted Class 1, 2, and 3 MARSSIM surveys, scoping surveys and characterization surveys in buildings and impacted sites within the shipyard.
The project schedules and survey requirements necessitated on-site laboratories
for field screening of samples to ensure remedial actions and existing conditions
meet the required project release criteria, and schedules. NWE currently has
3 radioanalytical laboratories onsite performing alpha, beta and gamma scans;
alpha, beta, and gamma direct readings; exposure rate measurements.
Remediation and survey work was being completed concurrently with a Historical
Radiological Assessment (HRA). NWE co-authored the HRA with the Department of
the Navy’s Radiological Affairs Support Office (RASO). As additional buildings
and areas were identified through the HRA research as having been potentially
impacted, the scope of work was modified to include those areas.
