Health Physics Consulting, US Department of the Interior – Western Region U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Menlo Park, CA
NWE is the health physics consultant for any and all health physics issues for
the USGS in Menlo Park, CA. NWE has an ongoing contract with the USGS to provide
Health Physics support services including:
- Program audits
- Monthly laboratory surveys
- Maintaining program records
- Conducting sealed source inventory and wipe tests
- Maintaining waste storage and waste storage inventory
- Packaging and manifesting radioactive and mixed waste
- General radiation safety training
- License oversight and compliance
- NWT is the contract 24/7 emergency response support
- NWT attends all radiation safety committee meetings
As part of NWE’s HP services, we provide training to include at least 4 classroom
contract hours per year. The course includes policies and precedence, procurement,
receipt, inventory and disposal of radioactive material, dosimetry requirements,
radiation protection procedures and instructions to workers as required by 10
CFR Part 19.12.
Radiation Safety Program Review and Audits, Alza Corporation (A Johnson & Johnson Company), Mountain View, CA
NWE provided a complete Radiation Safety Program review and audits. Items audited
included:
- License compliance: amendments, timely renewals, deficiencies of last license inspection
violations at last inspection and corrective action
- radiation safety committee, program manual, timely meetings, completeness of files
- accidents or incidents
- informational postings
- training program compliancy
- external radiation exposure monitoring
- laboratory monthly or weekly surveys
- dosimetry, and bioassay program
- inventory, sealed source wipe tests
- instrumentation, current calibrations, proper documentation
- security, access and fire procedures
- waste disposal, storage, record maintenance
- shipping procedures and documentation
NWE ensured that the Radiation Safety Program is in compliance with Title 17,
California Code of Federal Regulations and Title 10, Code of Federal Regulations
parts 19, 20, 21.
