Projects :: Decontamination / Decommissioning
New World Technology has extensive experience in the planning, project management and execution of decontamination and decommissioning (D&D) projects.
Site Decontamination, Decommissioning, Final Status Surveys, Peninsula Laboratories, San Carlos, California
Peninsula Laboratories, Inc., San Carlos, CA, chose to discontinue the use of radioactive materials at two of their locations. In order to comply with the requirements of California Regulation §30256, for vacating installations where licensed activities have taken place, Peninsula Laboratories contracted New World Environmental Inc. to perform an extensive radiological final status survey.
NWE conducted extensive radiation evaluation of the radioactive use areas in an impacted building. A 100% scan of the areas was done along with swipe sampling. None of the scan data was found to be distinguishable from background, however there were a considerable amount of swipes that were distinguishable from background. Removable contamination was found along the floor of the sink, in an iodination hood, within ducts of the hoods, all the way to the filtration system and ended before the venting reached the roof.
An extensive decontamination phase started once the extent of the contamination was known. All desks, counters, shelves, and hoods were decontaminated if needed. All contaminated floor tiles, concrete, filter box and all the ducts leading to filter box and all contaminated ducts leading to the roof were removed and placed in a radioactive waste bin. The radioactive waste was picked up for disposal on April 26, 2004, by EMC (Environmental Management Control), of Turlock, CA.
After decontamination, a final survey was conducted to ensure that all radioactive contamination was removed from the area. The data from the final survey proved to be non-distinguishable from background.
Site Decontamination, Decommissioning, Final Status Surveys, Jewelry Design Center, Los Angeles, California
New World Environmental Inc. was contracted by Jewelry Design Center, Los Angeles, CA to perform an extensive final status survey of a site that had been used and contaminated by one of their tenants.
The purpose of the survey was to insure that all radioactive materials had been removed from the rooms and that there was no residual radioactive material other than natural background. The final status surveys included direct surface contamination surveys for alpha radiation, and swipe surveys for removable contamination of Radium-226 and Tritium (H-3). Also, microR direct exposure rate measurements were performed to record ambient gamma radiation background. Survey results were analyzed to determine if the residual radioactivity levels in the building (survey areas) exceeded natural ambient background radiation levels.
An extensive decontamination phase started once the extent of the contamination was known. All desks, counters, shelves, floors and hoods were decontaminated if needed. All old radioactive waste left from a previous contamination exercise, contaminated floor tiles, trash, and old hood parts were placed in a radioactive waste bin. The radioactive waste was picked up for disposal by Thomas Gray and Associates of Orange, California.
After decontamination, a final survey was conducted to ensure that all radioactive contamination was removed from the area. The data from the final survey and the resurveyed areas proved to be non-distinguishable from background.
